MEME: America, Love it, or Leave it!

Laura Ingrahm’s recent racist screed made me all nostalgic for the times when my establishment mother would tell us rebellious teenagers, to love America or leave it,

The America we know and love doesn’t exist anymore. Massive demographic changes have been foisted on the American people, and they are changes that none of us ever voted for, and most of us don’t like … this is related to both illegal and legal immigration

you know, because we didn’t hold proper American values like America, where all people were created equal and America, the melting pot of the world and America, the land where anyone can have a better life.

I know back in the day, conservative Americans like her couldn’t be openly racist but they meant that only honest white Americans could have those things not those filthy immigrants who only pretended to be white like them Eastern and Southern Europeans.

And that all got me to thinking that nothing expresses the American dream or American values quite like The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus better known as the plaque on the Statue of Liberty.

After reading over that inspiring message, I thought I’d make this here meme to commemorate it and shame those who would deny the immigrants that were all of our forebears. Immigrants made this country what it is today. It is inconceivable that any patriotic American would claim otherwise.

It's been five long years of blogging the Trump years. We've laughed, we've cried, we've pulled some of our remaining hair out, but we've made it. It is almost done and our democracy, nation, and souls are still largely intact. Unfortunately, we're not through.There is much more to come as we stitch ourselves back together like some kind of common Frankenstein monster as we recover from the PTSD that Trump gave us and the needless deaths and suffering from #COVID19. We also have to keep #BidenHarris honest & progressive, oppose Republican obstructionism anti-democratic tendencies, and whatever other black swans await us. All of which will be addressed using good old-fashioned snarcky, sarcasticky, profaney fun and psychological insights.

  2. AMEN!! I am a first generation American…. my parents were French speakers from Quebec… Dad spoke with a distinct accent , my Mom didn’t have an accent because she came to the states as a child. In Vermont , my dad with the accent was considered as sketchy , my mom was acceptable …. no accent. Dad had a cross burned in front of his shop…. he put it out… . this is in the 50’s but also being Catholics didn;t help much either… Catholic school for me .. right next to the public school… we walked to school… the public school kids got bussed. Lots of small inferences to ” those damned Catholics…. etc… but no real violence …. you see we were white ….not black or brown…..were were in the middle. Eventually things changed , and we got to be bussed….etc, and being white we were eventually accepted and lots of things changed……as for our black friends …..not so much.

  4. I recently read (I forget where or by whom) the observation that every wave of immigrants, once having achieved “whiteness”, has wanted to close that Golden Door behind them. I’m also reminded of first hearing at about age 10 a song that explained the roots of bigotry. it is still my favorite tune from South Pacific.
