The news is full of death and tragedy lately, but the news of Henry Kissinger’s death at the auspicious age of 100, gets a well deserved, HUZZAH! from Ye Olde Blogge. Few people have caused as much harm as Kissinger did, and thank goodness he was the generation before I2I4.
Can you imagine him being in the cabinet? If you thought Bill Barr was a touch of evil — Thank you for ending the Iran-Contra investigations with all the pardons, Mr. Barr. Your enthusiastic support of democracy is much appreciated. Get out at the end and not tell anyone your objections until it is too late! — in the Ol’ Pussy Grabber’s cabinet, Kissinger would have been or would be an enthusiastic supporter of American authoritarian fascism in the cabinet.
Like many people, I see Kissinger as the war criminal that he is and would’ve preferred that he been ostracized instead of treated as the professor emeritus of American foreign policy. As Tengrain over at Mock Paper Scissors reminds us, Anthony Bourdain’s opinion of Kissinger — direct responsibility for supporting the Khmer Rouge and killing a hundred thousand Cambodians with all of the secret carpet bombing setting the stage for Pol Pot’s genocide.
Seriously, people should either reflexively spit or sing the refrain of Monty Python’s Henry Kissinger song. If you haven’t heard it for a while or ever heard it, give a listen. You won’t, though, because buffering.
As we say good-bye to one of the biggest war criminals in US history, I guess there is no better way to end it than with this!
All right, people say that you don't care!
But, you've got prettier legs than Hitler
And, bigger tits than Cher!
Henry Kissinger,
How we're missing you
And, wishing you were here!
Fuck you, Henry, whatever level of hell you now reside in. Fuck you, very much.

I think that the best fictional portrait of Kissinger is still Dr. Strangelove in that movie. This was a man to whom some people in the world mattered and others simply did not. Perhaps the saddest thing is that he became the standard that every subsequent Secretary of State (and, not just in this country) was expected to emulate, by which (and, probably by whom) they were judged.

Howdy Bob!
There was nothing complex or subtle or nuanced about Kissinger. He was the embodiment of realpolitik. When you are beholden to nothing other than the path of least resistance to achieve your political goals, then you are a very frightening person. When you have the full might and power of the US government behind you, you are a very dangerous person. I am thankful that Kissinger was of the previous generation and couldn’t serve in Trump’s cabinet. Barr was bad enough. Nixon and Kissinger were bad enough.
Dr. Strangelove. I should watch that one again. It has been too long.

The man is gone, but his influence is not. Reading this profile of a current national security adviser on the heels of the news about Kissinger, I was struck by the similarities: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/biden-national-security-adviser-brett-mcgurk-israel-palestine_n_656936c0e4b07b937ff4287f

The garden is growing from the same fertilizer if you take my meaning.

Calico, the thing that most people chose to ignore, is the fact WE elect these people. It is highly likely Trump will be re-elected! Just look at how long Kissinger held sway.

That is my point exactly! I make it over and over again. Voting is an aggregation of our views as a society. We are all responsible for the outcomes of our elections. They reflect our beliefs and values. If we’re electing someone like Trump, then it is because there is fertile ground for Trump’s beliefs and values to take root. I’ve explored the source of that fertility (?) in numerous posts.
Once people decide to vote and vote responsibly, we can end the threat from Trump, MAGA, and the GOP.
