Tommy Tuberville stood before god, the nation, and Nevadans and went full racist at a Trump rally. And, the crowd ate it up, screamed for more.
“They [the Democrats] want crime. They want crime, because they want to take over what you got. They want to control what you have,” Tuberville told the crowd. “They want reparation because they think the people that do the crime are owed that. Bulls—. They are not owed that.”

Trump, the other flabby white meat, referred to Elaine Chou, his former Secretary of Transportation, and wife of Senator Mitch McConnell, as China loving, Coco Chow! Whatever the fuck that means. Seriously? But, it does sound vaguely racist and denigatory, especially when juxtaposed with his supposition that McConnell hates him and has a death wish. If that isn’t a Proud Boys stand back and stand by moment, I don’t know what is. Time to start wearing the old bulletproof vest, Mitch.
And, of course, when you’ve gotten nothing better to say, go for the Replacement Theory. It’s always a crowd pleaser. Here’s one of the latest espousals of it for political fun and profit.

And, then there’s the furor over LA city council member Nury Martinez’s remarks recorded at a private meeting in Los Angeles that disparaged Blacks and Oaxacans. Remarks made casually and privately like that, they don’t occur in a vacuum. It wasn’t the first time she expressed those thoughts. Those are her values and beliefs. Those are the values and beliefs of the two men who were with her.
That all of these racist events happened in the last week or so and more or less openly and nonchalantly is no coincidence.
Racism thrives in hearts and souls of many Americans no matter their political belief, economic class, ethnicity, or geographical area. Racism is the cockroach of American politics. Leave too many food scraps and dirty dishes stacked in the sinks, and they come crawling out from under the fridge at night. Pretty soon, they don’t even scurry away when you turn on the light. They just sit there feeding on the rancid fetid refuse of your daily life while you shriek your outrage and run for the can of Raid that they’re already immune to.
What is alarming is that this naked open taunting racism has become a political weapon of the Republican Party. We’ve known for quite some time that they are using Hitler’s playbook to deliberately promote continual outrage and despair among their followers to make it more likely that they’ll believe any old lie that they choose to tell, to build a nearly impenetrable wall of cognitive dissonance to keep them all believing.
But, the natural progression of outrage goes from sitting in front of your television set sputtering your spittle inflected outrage as singing harmony and the back up chorus to Fox News’ Tucker and Hannity, to road raging, epitaph flinging, arms flailing as you go about your daily business, to “confronting” the liberals and calling the cops when Black people are found in white spaces, to standing your ground, to threatening people with your guns and vehicles, to believing that you can storm the capital because you are white, well educated, and have a “future.”
This only goes in one direction and that is an increase in violence. In order to ride herd on the MAGA base, politicians have to keep stoking the outrage. The higher those fires burn, the more they consume. Pretty soon, it comes bursting out of the bonfire and has caught the roofs of the neighborhood on fire and now we’ve got a firestorm sweeping across the city like the cops just firebombed MOVE in the West Philadelphia Osage Neighborhood.
What stokes more self-righteous anger than religion? You are right because gawd told you you were right!
These MAGA Republicans have to keep turning up the temperature. The PBS News Hour compiled these recent examples of Republican politicians turning to religion to help fan the flames of violent political rhetoric.
We need to be the party of nationalism and I’m a Christian, and I say it proudly, we should be Christian Nationalists.

White-Christian Nationalism builds on the white-grievance politics that helped vault Ronald Reagan into office and make the Ol’ Pussy Grabber acceptable to evangelicals.
This steadfast bedrock belief that our religion makes us right and, therefore, justifies whatever we do to advance our religious beliefs — Dan Cox said it, he said religious beliefs supersede government — has been here from the beginning of White people settling permanently in the Americas.
The Puritans did not come here for religious freedom; they came here for the freedom to discriminate against other religions. And, that sentiment has never been excised completely from the American soul.
It should come as no surprise then that 61% of Republicans and 78% of Evangelical Republicans want the country to declare itself a Christian nation. What is surprising is that 52% of Evangelical Democrats do. Luckily, they are a small minority. They want this even though they KNOW (57% of the Republicans, anyhow) it is unconstitutional.
Luckily, for us, this White Christian Nationalist fervor seems to be an old white person thing and not a Gen-Z thing. Unluckily for us, these old White Christian Nationalists want to do away with democracy and impose their fascist Christian order on all of us.

I think you’re right however I am a descendant of Samuel Chapin (the Puritan) and have seen the surviving testimonials from his sons. They did flee England for their lives. I’ve seen the church records and many of them left everything to charity. If they’d believed in owning land, I’d be a multi-billionaire! I don’t think they should be compared to today’s so called Republican Christians.

An interesting perspective. Yes, they fled for their lives, but their behavior here — as a group, not necessarily as individuals — is well documented. They did not tolerate those not worshipping in the Puritan ways. Also, they arrived here and found entire Native American villages devoid of people, crops still in the ground, food stores still in storage, and thanked god for providing for them. Of course, most of the people who lived in those villages died of some European disease that was brought over by earlier explorers and fisher folk, and the survivors had fled to other villages after burying their dead to spread the disease further afield.
While we cannot hold the Puritans and Pilgrims accountable for not understanding the spread of disease, we can hold them accountable for not seeing Native Americans as equals and realizing the slaughter that was taking place before their very eyes.
Whether or not Puritans believed in owning land or not, I cannot say. It seems that one of the foundational traditions of Western culture is individual ownership of property. It developed during the Renaissance and grew more refined afterwards. Many of the early settlers of the Americas held certain properties in common, sometimes out of necessity and sometimes out of a belief that it belonged to everyone.
While not every evil that Republicans are perpetrating can be laid at the feet of the Puritans, religious intolerance is one of them. Again, ask Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson of their experience of religious freedoms among the Puritans and Pilgrims.
The other dispute that Williams had with the leaders of the colony was over land ownership. He believed that only the Native Americans living on the land could transfer ownership of the land and provide a title to it. Of course, the colonists believed that it was the British monarch who could do so. So, there’s that.

Thanks, man! It has been a struggle with life balance lately. I just keep getting pulled in different directions. That’s the problem with being a part-time blogger, but a full-time citizen.

The best trick the devil ever pulled … I got that far earlier. I wanted to go off on a rant about Cavaliers, England’s younger sons (and daughters) of the landed gentry for whom there was no land left to inherit awarded “grants” to lands that didn’t belong to them and brought their 16th and 17th century baronial lifestyle to Turtle Island a hundred years before the “Puritans” got kicked out of Belgium. They started with what peasantry they could bring with them, which wasn’t nearly enough to sustain the life they were accustomed to, so they turned to enslaving the locals, which didn’t turn out well at all. That’s when they started importing Africans. Right about the same time the Captain of the Mayflower dumped his unruly passengers (who had drank all the beer) at the first rock he got to before the now beer-less crew killed them all … which is of course “America’s” founding myth, the devil’s best trick.

The Cavaliers of course brought more than their lifestyles, they brought the attitude; the caste, evolving, amplifying into the antebellum south and echos, haunts, the project today, but all we ever hear about are those damned “Pilgrims.” Well, and the “cowboys,” but that’s another myth. We’ve been kissing the south’s ass over their peculiar attitude from the very start and like WWII I’m starting to wonder who actually won those conflicts.

Those Cavaliers also neglected to bring with them their fathers’ foresters who might have understood why the natives used fire to manage the forests. Maybe it didn’t make all that much difference since they and their capitalist descendants set about to clear cut as much as possible to sell wood and grow cash crops.

Short-term gain versus Long-term risk (or gain, for that matter) – the usual winner is clear. There is also in this a feature of inequality. Resource loss in the poor country to supply the capital interests and excessive consumption in the rich country, another form of Trickle Up Economics and colonialism.

I think that you’ve hit upon a point that most liberals don’t quite get and, perhaps, don’t want to get: Trickle Up Economics and colonialism. As long as it is someone else doing most of the sacrificing and cutting back, we’re all for it, but as soon as it gets to us, well, we have a good excuse not to. That is the basic human quality that fuels the climate change.

I remember reading in one of those Zen books that were popular in the ’70’s that a Zen Buddhist master read the Sermon on the Mount and remarked that whoever wrote it was enlightened. Which is to say that their ideals are largely the same.
