SUMMARY: It is clear that Trump is in the throes of narcissistic collapse. Harris entry into the race and rapid rise in the polls has made his delusion of perfection impossible to maintain. He has to do something to redeem himself. Often narcissists resort to violence and verbal abuse. Sometimes, if the situation is particularly severe, suicide. What is Trump likely to do? Since so many have commented on Trump’s erratic behavior, especially during his recent press conference, his rally in Montana, and his interview with Musk, we can only conclude that he is self-destructing before our very eyes.
UPDATE: Doh! Somehow I FORGOT that Trump has been convicted of 34 felonies and is due to be sentenced for them and has several other active cases against him that he is at risk of losing. That’s gonna scar him for life.

Boy, being a part-time blogger and a full-time citizen can make keeping up with rapidly developing stories difficult. The story of the Felonious Rapist Traitor’s very public meltdown is of particular because Schadenfreude. But, also because of the self-destructive nature that narcissistic collapse can entail for the collapsing narcissist.
In The Trump Porsecution, Narcissistic Collapse, and the Looming Catastrophe, we cited several examples of famous narcissists in collapse, namely A. Hitler. We all know that he murdered Eva Braun and then committed suicide as the allies closed in on him, but what I didn’t know is that he blamed his generals and the German people for the loss of the war. He thought they were getting what they deserved for having let him down so badly. Lucky for us, Trump doesn’t really have the means to destroy the country or the world — let him back in office, and he will, though. I’m jus’ sayin’.
The Effects of Trump’s Narcissism on His Campaign
As I’ve said several times before, Trump’s narcissism will keep him believing that he is on the verge of winning no matter how dire the situation. When the end comes, like when the election is called against him or his last appeal is denied, it will be too late for him to avoid the humiliation of defeat by committing suicide as Hitler and other narcissists have done. Also, suicide would require that the Ol’ Pussy Grabber actually do something. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but other than grabbing pussy and golfing, the caricature of a human being doesn’t actually do a whole lot. He prefers to get others to do his dirty work.
Trump’s Two THREE Insurmountable Narcissistic Injuries
Trump faces two injuries that are melting his snowflakes: (a) He cannot avenge his loss to Joe Biden. In 2020, he famously said to Alyssa Farah Griffin, “Can you believe I lost to this guy?” Strongly suggesting that he experienced the loss as a significant injury to his narcissism. Perhaps the only thing that has kept the old lying windbag going was the prospect of beating Biden.
And (b) he is currently losing to a BLACK WOMAN. Losing the popular vote to Clinton was bad enough, bad enough that he lies about really winning the popular vote in 2016, so losing to a Black woman would vaporize all the snow in his flakes. It would be a terrible blow to his ego, especially when coupled with the inability to beat Biden.
AND (3) he is to be sentenced for his 34 counts of fraud he was convicted of in New York State, and his other trials are likely to continue in spite of the bone the corrupt SCOTUS gave exclusively — they won’t be doing this for a Democratic president — to him and Cannon’s incredibly blatant favoritism if he loses. He’s got to be freaking out.
The Possibility of Trump suffering Ministrokes
In addition, there is a third issue that we should be considering: he may be experiencing ministrokes. I don’t know for certain that he has cardiovascular issues, but would it surprise you if he did? No. Axios reported that he is struggling to get past his anger, meaning that the walls of Merde-a-Lardo (Thanks, Tengrain!) are running with ketchup and his blood pressure is probably spiking. Add to that his “lisp” when having his Xitter conversation with Musk, and you gotta wonder.
Harvard Health Publishing informs us that sudden problems with speech, even if they clear up eventually can be a sign of a stroke. Other signs include a droopy face, arm weakness, balance issues, and vision problems.
I’ve long maintained that Trump might be dyslexic because of his refusal to read, and when he reads from the teleprompter, he sounds like one of my beginner EAL students carefully saying each word. It may be that he is deviating from his written speeches in part because he’s having trouble seeing it.
Given Trump’s history of medical fabulism, we may never know. It likely doesn’t matter since unfit is unfit for whatever reason.
Likely Reactions to His Narcissistic Collapse
If Trump isn’t likely to take his own life, and he is unlikely to shoot someone in Fifth Avenue, how might he react to his ongoing narcissistic crisis? How might he self destruct?
Trump’s Self-Destructing Before Our Eyes is a Kind of Suicide
The Axios article gives us some suggestions. His aides are urging him to “leave the garbage behind” refocus his attacks on Harris and stop freelancing during his speeches. Unfortunately, as long as Trump is drowning in his own tears, he has other ideas about how best to handle the situation.
Trump is a slave to his hole in his soul where his self esteem should be. As long as perceives the world recognizing him for the loser that he knows he is, he cannot focus on anything else. He has to demonstrate that he is in control, dominating, winning, what superlative have you. It explains that queer remark that Kamala is a beautiful woman like Melania. He is trying to sexualize and objectify her. If he can reduce her worth to being how aroused and pleased he is by her appearance, then he eliminates her as a threat. It also appeals to the racist stereotype of the hyper-sexuality of Black women.
Other Self-Destructive Acts
Trump keeps serving up these own goals.
The Never Ending Ever Growing Willie Brown Helicopter Story
He threatened to sue the New York Times for questioning the veracity of his Willie Brown going down in a helicopter story, telling the insider access reporter extraordinaire, Maggie Haberman that he had flight records to prove it, only to mock her when she asked him for them.
Trump’s Obsession with Crowd Size
Trump continues to harp on about crowd size. First it was at his “press conference“ a few days ago. Then it was claiming that Harris had AI’ed her crowds at her rallies. And, finally it was a ridiculous claim of one billion people having listened to the lie-filled hate-fueled cringe-worthy discussion with Musk on Xitter.
Clearly crowd size is a sensitive topic for the Trumpster. He really worries about the size of his crowds almost like they were a metric for other aspects of his life.
The Felonious Rapist Traitor’s ego is collapsing in real time right before our very eyes. The cray-cray for coco puffs that goes along with narcissistic collapse is so concerning that we should all be girding for a spectacular display of angry venomous destructive mix of misogyny and racism. If Trump makes it to the 10 September debate, we may be in for a real show. That could be when the wax works melt down into a puddle.
Because when Trump gets stressed, he starts spewing detritus from every orifice faster than I’m losing my what little hair I have left, it behooves us to try and catalogue the evidence of his very public very messy nervous break down.
The Master Race Baiter
He continues to double down on his racist dog whistles and use of racist stereotypes with reference to Harris. In the Axios article it claims that he alienated donors at a fund raising dinner by saying he thought he was right about Harris deciding to be Black. This is in addition to dog whistling about Harris’ looks.
With each passing day, Trump sounds more and more unhinged and exhibits concerning behaviors. Each public appearance adds to the litany of ludicrous attacks and claims.
In short, Trump’s continuing narcissistic collapse may not cause him to act out violently against others or commit suicide, but it may be that it will cause him to encourage others to act violently on his behalf and to self-destruct before our very eyes. He will repeat his greatest hits of stupidity and bigotry ad nauseam and alienate every voting group except for hardcore MAGA as he vainly tries to take down Harris and protect his delusion of perfection.

As inhuman as it sounds, I would prefer the suicide. can’t believe I actually think it.

I have never wished death on anyone, but I recognize that if Trump were to pass from any cause it would put us all out of his misery and probably be the best resolution to the entire MAGA mess so we can get on with recovering from it.

The possibility that Trump is having mini strokes would explain some of what we are seeing, and adding organic neurological damage to the existing emotional an cognitive issues could only accelerate the process of collapse. If the difference in crowd sizes and Harris continues to pull ahead in the polls, at some point blaming the media and his opponents will not be enough and he will begin to turn on allies. I can imagine him getting to the point of accusing Vance and others of stabbing him in the back (I think Vance would if he got the chance. That guy is a snake.) That is when the campaign would begin to disintegrate for real.
The debate, if it actually happens, will be quite a show.

There are occasions that things on WP just don’t work or disappear for a while and then reappear or start working again. For example, right now, I can’t customize my site. I really want to because there are static features that need to be updated. I assume it will start working again eventually.
Vance’s entire purpose in Trump’s mind is to be blamed for any problems he’s having. Vance probably doesn’t realize that, but he is the fall guy. He started under the bus. Just like Hitler not only blamed the German people and his generals for his loss in WW2, he thought they deserved whatever pain and death were inflicted on them. Trump will definitely go that route. We’ve seen him do it already in Georgia scuttling the senators there guaranteeing Ossoff’s and Warner’s election and then Warner’s reelection. If he could’ve done Brian Kemp in, too, he would’ve. He Mitt Romney’ed Rubio for his small hands crack and for the Senate Russia report. He campaigned in Montana because Tester blocked Ronnie Jackson from becoming head of the VA. Trump neither forgets nor forgives and needs scapegoats for his numerous errors.
You’re right on Vance. He is a textbook psychopath with high executive functioning and a big touches of narcissism and sadism. Would that make him a narcissistic malignant psychopath? Anywho, he would relish the chance to push Trump off of the ticket and assume the top spot. Probably dreaming of it now. If the Republicans keep if and when Trump is out for whatever reason, they’d be idiots, though.

The thing about Vance is that he’s not just a snake, but a snake that come out looking like a different kind of snake every time it sheds it’s skin. If anybody with enough clout in the GOP is thinking of dumping Trump, they would need to do it soon. By this time next month, the absentee ballots start going out. I very much doubt that that party would be able to agree on a new candidate other than Vance now, but he wouldn’t have the hold on the core MAGAs that Trump does. It takes time to build that kind of cult of personality. I think the only way Trump would come off the ticket at this point would be if he died or suffered a clearly disabling event like a major stroke. Short of that, they are stuck with the monster they’ve created.
We will know that he sees he is in real trouble if he starts firing key people.

The only way Trump leaves the election is feet first. The only question is what will be the cause. More than likely it will be cardiovascular if it happens. I hate to say it, but it will put us all out of his misery, and be about the only way we can end the national fascism nightmare that he has plunged us all into.
The parties and states have their rules for replacing candidates on the ballot. It would pretty much have to be Vance. I think that is the party rule with the ticket is that the VP just assumes the position. Given that Trump has just cut Vance loose to campaign on his own, you can see what kind of campaign Vance would have. It would be disaster.
The campaign shake up will come in mid to late September after it is clear that Harris didn’t just get a bounce from the DNC but is now dominating the election. I think she’s up by 2.6 points in the 538’s average. There are polls that have her ahead in the swing states just at the upper limit of the margin of error.
It isn’t over by any means, but she’s in a good place right now.

She is, and it is getting better. The number of states with referendums to put abortion rights in their constitutions continues to grow. That is sure to drive turnout and help in the down ballot (i.e., “Throw the bums out who passed the restrictions and bans.”) Is it too fantastic to dream that issue could flip some state legislatures and governorships?
If Trump were to depart from us, it is hard to picture anybody, Vance or anybody else, being able to claim the role of Gods Own Candidate with the MAGA core quickly enough. The level of cognitive dissonance in that crowd would be extreme. Their only way of explaining it would be that he was murdered. The cult would likely be split between crushing depression with loss of interest in the election, and violent attacks on the perceived enemies and malefactors. Competing conspiracy theories would sprout like mushrooms after a deluge. GOP leadership would not be exempted from the blame. Some would not be able to accept that he was really gone.

Another gift from Trump’s narcissism is the selection of the woefully unqualified Vance. He has negative charisma. If it weren’t for MAGA automaticity in their voting decisions, he would never have won his Senate race even though he won by 7% in an election that heavily favored Dems in an off year.
He would inherit the Trump campaign, much like Harris inherited Biden’s, but it isn’t the smooth operating machine that Biden’s is. One of the unrecognized keys to the success of the Harris-Walz ticket besides their charismatic appeal and stage presences is the operation that Biden put together.
I’m sure if Trump up and died on us, which would please him to no end because of how badly it would fuck up the GOP and the country, it would plunge the party into absolute chaos. He chose his VP based on who would be most obsequious to him and the least threat to overshadowing him. Vance is no standard bearer. I’m sure he is wishing he had taken my advice — I’m sure he reads Ye Olde Blogge — and chosen Tim Scott.
Vance would pick up a sympathy vote, but the chaotic infighting and conflicting conspiracy theories and opportunism would cancel all gains out with painful losses. MAGA would collapse completely because Trump did not promote a successor and never would.

That sounds about right. The GOP is confused and baffled trying to adapt to the candidate on the other side having changed. Needing to manage a change on their side would be even worse.

I’m reading Steve Benen’s “The Ministry of Truth” about the techniques that Trump et al. use to re-write recent history like the Big Lie, which 70% of Republicans still believe. They are so accustomed to being able to define people and history on their terms that they don’t know what to do when people don’t accept their lies. Also, they haven’t settled on a tale to tell because Trump is too broken by Biden’s withdrawal to be able to do anything other than whinge about it. That really is the case. It is Biden’s withdrawal. He needs to avenge his loss in 2020 and now he can’t. The only thing he can think about right now is how to get back at Biden.
Right now, everyone else in the country is so relieved that Trump isn’t a fait accompli that they don’t have any interest in watching his syndicated election schtick from 2016 and 2020. It’s a movie we’ve all seen one too many times.

I saw one article that held that the key decision which ha changed everything was the Biden campaign’s seeking that early (before the convention) debate. Had the normal sequence been followed, no debate would have yet happened and Biden would still be Trump’s opponent. If Trump were capable of admitting a mistake, he would now be seeing agreeing to that debate as one of them.

Since the victor gets to write the history — and the Republicans will tell whatever lie they think will benefit them — it is just another way Handsome Joe out foxed the human caricature.

In a way Trump is the expression of everything that my friends overseas tell me represents their image of the stereotypical American: Shallow, totally lacking in empathy, self centered, more concerned with things than with people, inability to admit mistakes, ignorant, self centered, both obsessed with and afraid of sex at the same time, rude, crude, more money than brains… They’ve had decades of experience dealing with US tourists who behave exactly the same way, so his popularity here doesn’t surprise them in the slightest.
Of course their more biting comments have been moderated recently considering what’s been going on in the UK, Germany and France as they’ve been discovering that they have just as many problems as we have.

As an ex-pat for the past 25 years, I can confirm the assessment of Americans abroad. When you live outside of your culture, you lose the tempering effect of social norms and expectations and have to rely on what you’ve internalized. The good news is that the vast majority of Americans are merely boorish and have internalized some measure of internalized social manners. We are, by far, not the worst behaved tourists in the world.
We inherited our racism from our European roots, especially the English, so it isn’t surprising, really, that they are having racism issues similar to our own. Look for Russian funding and influence on the race riots in England. It was heartening to see the vast number of citizens turning out to counter the racists. We’re seeing a similar phenomenon here.
