Trump is completely out of control right now. In a recent interview with the New York Times he made the following alarming statements:

  • “I don’t need international law.”
  • Only his own morality and mind can stop him from doing…. things? What he wants?
  • “Ownership [of Greenland] is very important Because that’s what I feel is psychologically needed for success. I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can’t do with, you’re talking about a lease or a treaty. Ownership gives you things and elements that you can’t get from just signing a document.”

He also told oil executives on Friday 9 January, “We are going to do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not.” He went on to say that he “would like to make a deal, you know, the easy way. But if we don’t do it the easy way, we’re going to do it the hard way,” He seems to think that the US possessing Greenland and not simply having a greater military presence on the island or in the Arctic is the only way to counter rising military activity of Russia and China in the Arctic.

He has claimed that Russia and China will take Greenland even thought it is part of NATO and the entire organization would be obligated to defend it if either made a military move against it.

The Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that a US invasion of Greenland would destroy NATO and the post-World War II security structure.

Regardless of the reasons Trump is pursuing this destructive course of action, we have to do everything we can to stop him. The only thing he’ll understand is a firm boundary and We the People are about the only boundary left.

While Trump is behaving in wildly destructive and criminal ways on a variety of fronts, and is threatening the liberal democratic world order that maintains the world as we know it, the annexation of Greenland in any capacity by any means is going to absolutely destroy it all. It is the gravest most direct threat to our nation that we face.

We absolutely have to do everything we can to stop him from burning NATO, the UN, and the post we II security structure down.

Since the Senate passed a resolution to prevent Trump from taking military action in Venezuela and the House passed an extension of the ACA subsidies, gives us some hope that Congress may try to defend our national interest and put a stop to this madness. Maybe. It’d worth a try.

Prepare for Contact

When you call a Congressional person’s office, they’re likely to have an intern answering the phone to take a message. It’s not like your senator or representative is sitting there waiting for your call. Or, they’re likely to follow the strategy of leaving it on voicemail to discourage you. There are two things that make contacting your members of Congress either better or more sure of success:

Have a Script

Know what you want to say ahead of time. It helps you hit all the points you want to make, be polite, stay on message, be efficient, and are ready for voicemail.

Here’s a model to use or follow:

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [STATE and LOCALITY].

I’m calling today to urge you to stand up to Trump over his threats to annex Greenland. Such a move would destroy NATO and the post-WW III security structure that we’ve built to keep us all safe.

Trump will not stop unless we stop him. You must work with Congress to put a War Powers Resolution in place limiting his ability to annex Greenland.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Call as a Group

You have to call during business hours, so make it a day drinking game! Pass the phone and the shots around a group of friends, family, acquaintances, and strangers snagged off the street!

Seriously, you’re more likely to do a thing if you’ve (a) made a plan with date, time, and method established and (b) have a buddy or group doing it with you. So, get yourself organized and have some fun with it!
