It is increasingly seeming like it is too late to save our democracy or avoid much of the hardship of restoring it, especially since one side isn’t willing to participate in democracy any more. Polarization is the demise of democracy. Conclusion: be ready for a real fight.

You’da thunk that with everyone. — okay all the progressive liberal thinking types — at home most of last year, there’d’ve been no crime to speak of much less murder and mayhem, but no, violence, murder, and gun sales all increased last year. Why? You know why. Trump.

As if we needed any more evidence that the GQP no longer wants to be constrained by elections. They are working towards creating a single-party pseudo-democratic minority-rule authoritarianism. But, it still needs to be seen to be believed. It is scary and difficult to read because it makes it all so real. We need to fight for our democracy.

What is wrong with white voters? A LOT! How could anyone in their right minds vote for four more years of Trump? Well, 57% of white voters did. There is a lot wrong there when you see 270,000+ needless deaths and want four more years of that shit.
I’ve reblogged Vox’s article on the true story that inspired Arlo Guthrie’s Thanksgiving masterpiece — the Charlie Brown’s Christmas of Thanksgiving, amirite? — to help us to be more thankful for the good things we’ve got and treat each other with kindness in these stressful times.

Ever wonder what all the crazy crap that Trump says means? Here’s your guide to interpretting the full on bizarre cray-cray that Trump dumped on us this week during Laura Ingraham’s interview

With all the mishegas running around about the election just 77 days away as of this writing, I thought it timely to put together this little annotation of websites that will help you navigate it all. My advice: bookmark this post and consult it often!

What could possibly drive people to refuse to wear masks, social distance, or stay at home as much as possible? It just defies all logic and reason, right? Here are the three psychological factors that combine for the perfect storm of conservative resistance to containing the #COVID19 pandemic

If you are as worried sick as I am about the fate of our democracy, then you’ll want to read my review of Masha Gessen’s 2016 article, Autocracy: Rules for Survival that was published in The New York Review of Books. When we compare her six rules to the sorry state of affairs, real despair sets in. It’s like watching one of those slasher horror films, you know what’s going to happen and there’s absolutely nothing you can do to stop it. Even though the character is being extremely stupid and doing stuff no one would ever do outside of a movie, you still gotta sit there and watch it.

The deliberate flaunting of democracy and the open destruction of it by the GOP just pisses me off. They are so sure that the electorate either cannot or will not hold them accountable that they aren’t even bothering to hide it. If we let them get away with it in November. If we don’t vote Trump and the Senate majority out in November, then we really are the United Fucking States of Fucking Stupid.

In a breathe of fresh air, we get polling that lefty voters are voting based on their concerns for the amount of political power vested in old white men and their willingness to control PoC’s and women with it. Read it and rejoice. All may not be lost just yet.

Okay, it’s really long, but it’s a deep dive into deep culture. To borrow a phrase from Ricky Ricardo, there’s a lot of ‘splaining to do.
Do our deep cultural beliefs still support democracy? That’s a sobering and serious question. And, the answer is terrifying.

Climate change news just keeps getting worse. And, until we reach some kind of happy equilibrium — that’s a population of about 500,00 human beings, BTW — with planet earth, it probably will just keep getting worse, too. I mean, as bad as it is right now, when billions of people begin dying, that will be worse. So, what happens when the worst happens? Unfortunately, even more bad stuff: violence and cruelty
What to make of Mueller’s testimony? Will it help? Will it hurt? Will it not matter? How will people react? Well, psychology has something to say about it all… and it’s better news than you think!
Ever wondered how Fox News does it? Persuasive Design goes a long way to explaining how they keep your parents, friends, and neighbors enthralled. Don’t fear, though. I have divided the post into three successive parts: the Quick Dip, the Shallow Dive, and the Deep Dive. Each is an extension of the last so you can read as much or as little as you like and still get something you can use.
In our ongoing sometimes series, Fascification WATCH in which Ye Olde Blogge documents our seemingly irrevocable slide into fascism. Today’s issue: the threat to put the citizenship question on the census in spite of a Supreme Court decision preventing it.
A re-blogging of an interview of March Hetherington by Exra Klein on Vox.com. They discuss Hetherington and Weiler’s theory that the political divide between Repubes and Dems is based on how each side views the world. The Repubes view the world as fundamentally dangerous, the Dems as safer. I add that makes Repubes risk averse and Dems risk tolerant. Let me know what you think in the comments.
Conservatives from those in Congress to those trolls inhabiting the Internet are going through massive gyrations to discredit Dr. Ford, Ramirez, and Swetnick in particular and sexual assault survivors in general and to defend Boof K as a normal average choir boyish type guy. Let’s psysplain why these […]
This article is right up the Psy’s alley: it uses psychology — although without explicitly identifying the tendencies as such — to explain our inexplicable politics. However, it is not nearly snarky, sarcasticky, or profaney enough. That’s okay, I fixed that by writing this here introduction. It is […]
