Given that there is a very real very deadly very destructive opiate addiction epidemic going on in this country, I hope that this update on Marx’s old line, Religion is the opiate of the masses, and Edward R. Murrow’s Television may be the opiate of the people, isn’t too offensive.

Given that one of most intoxicating effects of social media is that it gives you a sense of accomplishment when you’ve actually done very little, especially if one is trolling, it may inhibit assertive positive behaviors. This trend is in contrast to social media’s role in political movements and actions like the Women’s March and opposition to various rapings of the ACA by the Repubes in order to give unnecessary and ineffective tax cuts to the wealthy, Meme: Sold Dirt Cheap
