Meme: The Authoritarian Party

The Repubes are no longer even trying to hide their anti-democratic desires. They are openly and cravenly authoritarian. They do not want to do the difficult tasks that make democracies work and function like educate our citizens, allow for a free flow of government information, collect and analyze data on our most troubling and threatening issues, offer policies and laws, and compromise with the opposition. They prefer to suppress the vote and deny the franchise to likely non-Repube supporting populations, Gerrymander a permanent majority, steal Supreme Court appointments, collude with foreign powers to steal elections, deny basic rights and services to citizens, deny human rights to minorities and immigrants. The list goes on and on.

They are openly hollowing out our democracy and leaving a shell to hide their authoritarian practices and satisfy the stooges. It turns out Ben Franklin was right when he said, A republic, if you can keep it. And Thomas Jefferson was, too: If we are to guard against ignorance and remain free, it is the responsibility of every American to remain informed.

Unbelievably we have a substantial minority that are happy with an authoritarian government (as long as it suppresses those they want suppressed and not them) and, more importantly, an indifferent minority who are “undecided” and “uncommitted” and are vulnerable to the Russians hacking our elections.

A republic, if we can keep it. Looks like we just might not.

  1. You’re right, unfortunately. I am still dumbfounded by people who say, “I regret my vote but I could still never vote for Hillary, she was too corrupt” or don’t say anything at all … they are still in full denial or maybe just embarrassed. Or maybe they want the repeal of legal abortion and no taxes and no gun laws they don’t care if everything else fails. I do know people like that too … some in my own family.

    • Howdy Silver!

I had a conversation just the other with a very intelligent well-educated liberal teacher who said that both parties were pretty much the same and maintained his stance even after I pointed out that LBJ single handedly lifted the elderly and disabled out of poverty with Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security and passed the civil rights legislation. All of which the Republicans have been gunning for ever since. They got the Voting Rights Act and just may kill Medicaid as we know it. Still, he shook his head and maintained they were the same.

What does it take? Does it take your own grandmother being reduced to poverty and eating Alpo out of a can before you start to see the differences?

I think I need to take a break from all this for one day. Or, if I could find a picture of an elderly person and a can of Alpo…
