Call Your Senator About Convicting Trump

We’re all traumatized all over again, re-traumatized, by the House Impeachment Managers’ presentation of video, audio, and text evidence of Trump’s incitement of the 6 January Insurrection Riot. We all realize just how guilty he is.

It is somewhat comforting to see that Repube Senators fall silent and watch the presentation and are obviously disturbed by what they’re seeing.

So, now is the time to strike. It is time to call YOUR Senators — don’t be calling no Sen. Lankford or Mitch McConnell, Josh Hawley, or Ted Cruz unless they are YOUR Senators. They need to see and hear the support of their constituents for conviction and barring Trump from office.

The Scripts

Calling or Writing

Use this script when calling or writing your Members of Congress. Adapt as needed.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [STATE and LOCALITY].

I’m calling today to express my support for convicting Donald Trump for inciting the 6 January Insurrection Riot and barring him from ever holding federal office again.

Trump has demonstrated that his destructive behavior will not be curbed, indeed it seems only to escalate. He did not learn from the Mueller Report or his first impeachment. He has now fomented a direct assault on Congress. He simply cannot be trusted. He must be held accountable and barred from holding federal office.

Thank you for your time and attention.

IF LEAVING A VOICEMAIL: please leave your full street address to ensure your call is tallied.

The Starter Tweet

Copy and paste this starter tweet. You may need to adjust the wording to fit the character limits.

Trump incited the Insurrection Riot on 6 Jan. He is a danger to our democracy. He must be held accountable and barred from holding office. He cannot be trusted to protect America from his worst instincts. You MUST vote to convict and bar him from office.

Tips for Calling

When you call your representative’s office, please remember the following:

  • Only contact YOUR MoC! They only listen to their constituents and dismiss requests from non-constituents.Ask for the aide working on the policy-related issues.
  • Be polite! No matter whose office you’re calling. No matter what their positions are. No matter how inflamed you are about the issue — and you should be very passionate — be polite.
  • Remember that the people you are talking to are people! So, be nice.
  • Call during business hours of the area code their office is in. Typically, that is 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
  • Have a script or notes to follow so you don’t forget anything.
  • Maybe call with friends. You know like a party.

In Addition to Calling

I’ve heard back from readers that some MoC’s voice mail boxes are always full! It’s as if they don’t want to hear from their constituents. Kinda like those MoC’s who don’t hold town halls or other open forum meetings. Here are some other ways to contact your MoC:

  • Visit their local office and talk to a staffer. Organize a group — maybe join an Indivisible group — alert the press, film and post it to your social media.
  • Send a postcard to their office. Nothing says I care like kicking it old school and using snail mail.
  • Email their office. Lay out your concerns in a brief email and send it in. We all know how easy it is to email. Make sure you include the issue you are addressing in the subject line.
  • Use the contact page on their website. This is the surest way of getting a message to them. Each MoC has an official government website and each has a contact page that comes with it automatically.
  • Contact them using social media. It’s hard to break through all the noise on social media, but it can’t hurt to try given all the time we all spend using it. Be sure to tag your MoC’s when social mediaing about about a specific issue. Be clear and respectful, though, when addressing an issue that you want your MoC to act upon. Make sure you let them know you are a constituent.
  • Write a letter to the editor. Make your thoughts known in your local news outlets. Your MoC monitor the local press and will know it.
  • Organize friends, family, neighbors, and strangers to contact their MoC, too. Make it into a party. Get everyone together and pass the phone around. Get everyone to call or write. Assign mediums for people to use. Have a drink and some snacks. Read ’em out loud to each other. Laugh, Cheer. Celebrate being a participant in our democracy.
  • Visit Ye Olde Blogge’s Contact Your MoC page for a more detailed list of options, suggestions, tips, links, and other useful information.

  1. The House Team are driving home the whole story, emphasizing “They came after YOU, Your family members, your staff.” I haven’t been watching, but listening, and its had me rattled, and I wasn’t there. The presentation of how he made it happen and why is, or ought to be, devastating. It is hard to imagine what the Defense, already confused and inept, can answer, and Trump won’t like anything short of claiming it was the right thing to do because the election really was stolen, and they seem to be smarter than to go there.

So far, the prosecution is letting the enablers in the room off the hook, but if they can’t see the looming specter of conspiracy investigations in the not distant future, they are dumber than a box of rocks. Merrick Garland is real good at leading that kind of investigation.

If those Repub Senators don’t convict him, Trump owns them for the rest of their political lives, lock, stock, barrel, and soul. And the Dems will, rightly, tie them to this forever.

I’m listening, too. The recordings of the police communications was just chilling. The times that people had to turn and run from insurrectionists — Romney, Schumer, Pence — was chilling. Luckily, even the Republican senators are paying attention to the more horrific parts. The emotion of it all just may carry the day.

I keep going through the list of Senators and can get to ten maybe twelve Republicans that might could vote for conviction and removal, but I can’t get any closer than that. If McConnell openly threw his lot in with the conviction wing, they could get over the hump, but I doubt McConnell will. Seriously, though, if McConnell’s goal is to win back the Senate, his best bet of doing that in his lifetime is breaking with Trump and rebuilding.

He’s trying to figure out which way the most lie in 2022, I’d wager, and it just isn’t clear to him. So, since we’re risk averse unless facing a loss, he is inclined to stay with the status quo. If there were some way of demonstrating the impending electoral loss to him, he’d drop Trump in a second, but since the GOP GAINED seats in the House and just barely lost the Senate and Trump got 74 million votes, it ain’t clear that this is an impending electoral loss, especially with the gains the GOP made in the states and their further efforts to suppress the vote. All those things add up to stay the course. Of course, it helps when you’re thinking that a single-party pseudo-democratic minority-rule autocracy wouldn’t be so bad.

              • Mitch, along with pretty much all of the Senate Republicans, is in a no-win situation. Acquit Trump and they are stuck with him as the head of the party, firmly under his thumb, and the Democrats make sure everybody knows it for 2022 and 2024 (There’s gobs of attack ad material in the trial presentation). Plus, none of them can seriously plan on running for President in 2024 unless Trump winds up in jail. If they vote to convict Trump he looses the Flying Monkeys on them and primary challenges, or the party looses the Trump base and becomes a minority party for a long time. For the Republican Party, the status quo is over, as over as going back to before COVID time, or climate stability.
